The Skinny: When a friendly tipster named Colleen turned us on to this historic estate in Purchase, N.Y., she mentioned that the property was likely headed to auction, and made the nearly inevitable conclusion that it was destined to become the next Westchester subdivision. A savior better swoop in soon for this grand 1907 Colonial, which was designed by venerable architecture firm McKim, Mead, & White. Over the years, the original 400-acre plot has been whittled down to just eight, surely driven by the intense demand for land in Westchester—and the extravagant sums likely offered for it. Well, it appears all that excess dough ran out, because Colleen also noted that the owner was still around to watch the grand estate meet its end. While architecturally no match for Stanford White's Astor Courts—which has just been taken off the auction block and listed for $8.9M—surely there's a market for more modest MM&W creations. Unfortunately, the price isn't so modest at $7.5M. Will some white knight appear to rescue this 13,000-square-foot piece of history? Or will the development dons get their way?
