Location: Manhattan Beach, Calif.
The Skinny: Prolific post-and-beam architect Ray Kappe left the wood behind in the '80s to produce this seaside concrete behemoth. Squeezed onto a corner lot on the oceanfront promenade known as The Strand, Kappe's 5,200-square-foot creation is the pinnacle of '80s interior obsolescence: just check out that mirrored bedroom and black leather number. A little decor revamp might make it tolerable, but the views need no dressing up, what with a panorama extending from Catalina to Malibu. And if things still get a little oppressive in the black and gray dungeon, at least it's just a few steps from that Pacific Coast sand.
