Digging through the Country Living archives online, we landed in Martha's Vineyard, at actors Tony Shaloub and Brooke Adams's lovely vacation saltbox. When the couple purchased the cottage, Shaloub "imagined an old hunting lodge, overrun with heavy wooden furniture in varying shades of brown." What he got, thanks to his wife's seasoned eye, is a white-washed space replete with all the tokens of Vineyard ease: beadboard wall and ceiling paneling, a wraparound porch, and a dining room table made from salvaged wood from a '20s schooner. (Re-purposed stuff is a must in cas-Americana beach houses.) Not to mention the kitchen's original mint-green Formica countertops, a very cool relic from the '30s. Shaloub's best known for his role playing an OCD/omniphobic detective on the TV series Monk; here, though, he's as laid back as it gets. "Anytime the sun's shining, I'm jumping up and down, screaming, 'We've got to get to the beach!'" he says.
