Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Price: $23,000,000
The Skinny: The Sword Gate House, a sprawling 17,000-square-foot Charleston original, thumbs its well-powdered nose at at McMansions a hundred years its junior. But this massive plantation-style estate isn't living in the past, as its "Hurricane Preparedness" can attest: auto-launching backup generator and redundant pump systems come standard. Also among its virtues: a formal dining room and a formal breakfast room, fireplaces so numerous they go uncounted, and a full complement of staff quarters. Plus, in a move popularized by the $150 million Spelling mega-manse in LA, a "gift wrapping room." Problem? The Spelling shack has been shopped around for years to no avail. With Sword Gate set to triple the previous record sale in Charleston, let's hope agent Doug Berlinsky fares a bit better.
