Contemporary Renovation Hides Behind Staid Facade

Have a nomination for a jaw-dropping listing that would make a mighty fine House of the Day? Get thee to the tipline and send us your suggestions. We'd love to see what you've got.

Location: Brookline, Mass.
Price: $12,500,000
The Skinny: Judging from the facade, this Georgian Revival mansion would have dusty interiors better suited to high tea than modern entertaining. Not so in this 11,500-square-foot hybrid in the Boston suburbs. Originally constructed in 1929, Balemor recently underwent a complete interior renovation and in a modern style. While some of the period details might have gone by the wayside—and we can't be sure what survived the test of time, anyway—the results don't leave much to be desired. Six bedrooms and 11 bathrooms on 2.2 acres in the village of Chestnut Hill, one of Boston's most desirable bedroom communities, is nothing to sneeze at. Then again, neither is the $12.5M price tag.
