Billionaire Philanthropist Ready to Go House Hunting Again

New, 1 comment

With his marriage to socialite Mercedes Bass officially on the outs, the billionaire oil heir Sid Bass will reportedly be turning over the couple's three lavish homes to his wife in an amicable divorce. Sid, who shrewdly built on an oil-and-gas fortune inherited from his father, has some experience with expensive divorces. In 1986, his first wife, Anne, got $200M in a settlement, after Sid and Mercedes, then also married, were found shacked up together at the tony Hôtel Plaza Athénée in Paris. Apparently things are much less scandalous this time around, with Mr. Bass agreeing to relinquish the family homes, including the sprawling estate (above) in his native Fort Worth, Texas, where the wealthy investor is said to spend much of his time. Also soon to be in the hands of legendary Metropolitan Opera benefactor Mercedes are a ski house in Aspen, Colo. and an 18-room pied-a-terre at the luxe and discreet 4 East 66th Street in NYC. That's the same building where Microsoft founder Paul Allen just purchased a seven-room penthouse for $25M.
