The Cape Cod Home of the "America the Beautiful" Songwriter

Have a nomination for a jaw-dropping listing that would make a mighty fine House of the Day? Get thee to the tipline and send us your suggestions. We'd love to see what you've got.

Location: Falmouth, Mass.
Price: $995,000
The Skinny: While spending a summer teaching English in the mountains of Colorado in 1893, Massachusetts native Katharine Lee Bates penned the words to the now-famous patriotic song "America the Beautiful." The song would go on to challenge the "Star-Spangled Banner" for the title of national anthem, yet few people are familiar with Bates. Perhaps that's why her childhood home, a beautifully restored Colonial in Falmouth, Mass., doesn't attract Kennedy Compound type attention or prices. The 2,400-square-foot, four-bedroom house sits on a quarter acre of lawn, surrounded by mature trees, within easy walking distance of town, but still comes in just under $1M. Not bad for the quintessential New England house with a dose of bona fide American history thrown in.
