It's not every day such a good thing comes in such a small package; this time, it's in the form of the one-bedroom, 1.5-bathroom Manhattan apartment belonging to fashion designer Zang Toi. Nestled on a charming block just off Fifth Avenue on the Upper East Side, the 1,300-square-foot pad is one of eight units in a 1901 townhouse and features 12'4"-high ceilings, moldings, marble mantels, grand fireplaces, and other Beaux-Arts details that remain even after Zoi renovated the place shortly after he bought it for $1.255M in 2004. Original parquet floors are now lacquered black, gone is the gilding, "and in came a 21st-century take on ancien régime opulence with a minimalist palette of black and white accents lacing it all together, from wall sconces and window hardware to fire screens and furniture," according to a piece that ran in the March 2007 issue of Elle Decor. The apartment is now listed for $2.8M but sadly likely doesn't come with the home's real pièce de résistance: an enormous mahogany "museum-quality bed" that was designed by the great French furniture maker François Linke.
