A California Classic Built for the Family Behind John Deere

Location: Santa Barbara, Calif.
Price: $4,250,000
The Skinny: The Butterworth family might sound like they'd be tied up in the maple syrup industry, but, in fact, ever since William Butterworth married Katherine Deere back in 1892, the family has been associated with landscaping machinery giant John Deere. Built in 1900, while Bill Butterworth was still under the thumb of his father-in-law, this 5,700-square-foot Shingle Style spread is now one of the better preserved turn-of-the-century homes in Santa Barbara. Surprisingly, the five-bed, six-bath mansion rests on just 0.84 acres, hardly enough to justify the purchase of a ride-on mower, but the gardens, thick with mature trees and palms, at least hint to the source of the fortune that built this tasteful home.
