The American Version of Versailles is Surrounded by Asphalt

Have a nomination for a jaw-dropping listing that would make a mighty fine House of the Day? Get thee to the tipline and send us your suggestions. We'd love to see what you've got.

Location: Versailles, Ky.
Price: $30,000,000
The Skinny: Despite a stratospheric price tag and out-of-the-way location, this turreted stone castle has a listing that's lacking in description. Luckily, Erika Riggs over at the Zillow Blog did a little snooping around. Turns out this Kentucky castle was started in 1968 by a couple who had just returned from a grand tour of Europe, but the construction lasted longer than their romance. By the time they divorced in 1975, the castle still wasn't complete and sat abandoned until 2003, when it was sold off to a Florida tax lawyer for $1.8M. During renovations in '04, fire ravaged the main structure, but it was rebuilt as a bed-and-breakfast. Somehow, despite the mishaps and a downturn in the real estate market, the purported value of this 50-acre property has jumped to $30M.
