Dusty Deserts Made More Desirable by These Five Offerings

The desert, a naturally inhospitable place, is the most egotistical place to build a home. Nature has decided to tell us humans to steer clear of the barren wastelands with their high heat, meager water supplies, and inarable land, yet still we insist on trying to live there. Well, in these particular desert abodes, the living ain't so bad. Take Marmol Radziner's desert house in Desert Hot Springs, Calif., a prefabricated beaut that's been lingering on the market since 2005. After a series of price cuts, the modern corrugated homestead is asking $849K. The dramatically lit, linear structure relies on solar power and energy-efficient glass to keep the electric bill down, but we imagine the A/C running near non-stop to keep this glassy aerie cool in that desert sun.

? The mountain biking mecca of Moab, Utah plays host to this glassy "executive home," built on a remote red rock ridge and listed for $2M. With views of the surrounding undulating stone and luxuries like a wine-tasting room, a home theater, and an infinity pool, this 8,700-square-foot mansion is a long way from the rustic Old West. Outdoor enthusiasts should be satisfied with the famous hiking and biking trails of Moab, just out the back door.

? The truly ambitious desert builders seem to have flocked to Arizona, where several big-ticket residences are on the market. This $5.5M spread features 13,700-square-feet and five bedrooms, but stands eerily vacant. The overgrown Scottsdale, Ariz. mansion is now—perhaps unsurprisingly—bank-owned.

? Elsewhere in Arizona, these modest digs are set to fetch $725K. That price includes fenced acreage and a two-bedroom house with oasis-like views of Martinez Lake. The price is tempting, but the remote location—halfway between Phoenix and San Diego—might be keeping buyers at bay.

? Off-the-grid types with seriously deep pockets might be wooed into purchasing this remote property whose location is only noted as "South of Sanderson, Texas." The $16.5M spread must have its acreage improperly noted in the listing (which claims just 0.66 acres), as there are five miles of Rio Grande River frontage. Despite the sprawling property, the only dwelling is a small ranch house that is advertised as having remarkable "electricity and telephone service."
