Phyllis Wheatley Elementary School, the subject of an intense—if brief—preservation initiative, has finally seen the wrecking ball. The dilapidated midcentury schoolhouse, severely damaged during Katrina, was demolished two months ahead of schedule, a real finger in the eye for Treme star Wendell Pierce. The actor narrated a 12-minute documentary on the school in order to raise awareness, but apparently his efforts were too little, too late. According to Architizer, the school board plans to construct a “21st century school” on the property.
