Continental Summer: The Cream of Germany's Summer Crop

While the crowds flock to the French Riviera, Spain, Sardinia, and Italy, Germany is one European country that is frequently overlooked by seasonal visitors from overseas. But these five listings stand to make the most of the mild temperatures and long days of Germany's summer. This Frankfurt penthouse offers voluminous space, plenty of light, a spacious patio, and a few satisfyingly off-beat design choices, like cast concrete cantilevered stairs and a cube of bookshelves. The 2,850-square-foot spread has two bedrooms, two baths, and is asking $2.78M.

? South of Bonn, on the Rhine, this 1000-year-old stone castle awaits a new caretaker. While the price is currently concealed from non-qualified buyers, the property's virtues are not, like 32 acres, "5000+ trees," 20,000-square-feet of interior space with a six room master suite, all of it "cozy enough to be a private residence." The views are the real winning virtue here, as the stone pile sits atop a hill on the river's edge.

? Less remote than the Rhine River property, this 22-room villa is located in a private park-like setting in Berlin. Marketed as a private home or embassy, the villa retains many of the classic features from its 1913 construction, including an intricately carved balustrade, detailed stonework, and French doors. The price of $8.6M is actually a little less than one might expect, given the miniature palace is aimed at sovereigns and states.

? For a more modern look, it's back to Frankfurt to check out this $2.2M three bedroom. The renovated pad features outdoor space, towering ceilings, and a very un-European jacuzzi tub. Plus, there are treetop views of the Frankfurt am Main skyline, which have led the listing broker to dub this joint "Mainhattan Skyline Views."

? Two and a half hours northwest of Frankfurt, this $963K apartment in Essen offers luxury while creeping in under the $1M mark. Broad windows provide views of the neighboring botanical gardens and light to the long, narrow living space.
