Steven Huff, chairman of Wisconsin-based TF Concrete Forming Systems, is currently building a 72,000-square-foot personal residence out of concrete in Christian County, Mo. Pensmore, as the massive estate is called, "represents what we believe will be a practical application of new technologies to bring to life a modern version of the Jeffersonian ideal of the self-sufficient sustainable estate," according to the official website. Perched on 500 acres, Pensmore is designed to act as an above-ground bunker, of sorts: "the whole house is in essence a storm shelter," with steel fiber-reinforced concrete protecting from tornados, earthquakes, fire, and flood. All this, and still the website maintains: "sustainable thinking with practicality."
