On The Block: Five Luxurious Estates Set to Go to Auction

Thanks mostly to the economic downturn, auctions have become an increasingly popular way to sell real estate—especially properties that have been lingering on the market for a little too long. It's not just run down foreclosures that are sold by this unusual route—John McCain's former Arizona estate has a date in two weeks and Tennessee's $28.5M Crantzdorf Castle was sent to auction back in June. There are more, like this well-lit Evergreen, Colo. spread that might be unfurnished, but doesn't lack for luxury. The 8,600-square-foot house sits on more than 10 acres outside of Denver with seven bedrooms, a movie theater, a gym, and extensive outdoor entertaining spaces. All it takes to get in on the bidding is a certified check for $25K.

? This Linville, N.C. golfer's paradise borders on the links at a lofty elevation of 4,900 feet, but the huge place also has space for the non-golfer to enjoy. A game room, gym, office, sunroom, gallery, and two-story trophy room round out the luxe features. That trophy room, with its gun cases, mounted leopards and deer, and crowning stained-glass chandelier, is the very definition of over-the-top. With this whole auction thing, the next hunting-happy buyer stands to snatch it up for (relatively) cheap.

? Built by the venerated architecture firm of McKim, Mead, and White, this Purchase, N.Y. estate had been wallowing on the market for years. The pretty white elephant was, and is, in need of work, but, with that architectural pedigree, it shouldn't be too hard to find someone to scoop it up at auction. The house features 11-foot ceilings, mahogany doors and floors, a pool, a wine cellar, and no fewer than 10 fireplaces.

? In one of the country's premier boatbuilding capitals, Southwest Harbor, Maine, this waterfront estate has enough to keep the locals happy, except for a dock, which might explain why it's headed for auction. The property features five bedrooms split between two structures, both of which have the rustic feel that's so appropriate for coastal Maine.

? Further up in Maine, in the tiny seaside hamlet of Roque Bluffs, this two bedroom with broad deck on three acres will auctioned on August 22. Pity that few buyers will likely be able to make the trek up to Roque Bluffs. The town is almost six hours by car from Boston.
