A small-time rental property developer from south London, John Johnson, has been hit with a record fine after tearing down a 165-year-old townhouse without permission (above). The financier bought the house for $1.64M and had planned on reconstructing from scratch before the courts intervened. Those courts ordered a hapless Mr. Johnson to pay $132K for his negligence, along with almost $70K in court costs. The developer had planned on saving $180K by razing the property as opposed to refurbishing the old structure, but any hope of a profit now seems to have gone down with the gavel.
