Sunland Park, N.M., mayor Martin Resendiz is making good of his appointed duty and putting his small border town on the map! And it's all because he's done exactly what lots of hardworking Americans do: drink. And now, California architecture firm Synthesis"+ is suing Sunland Park for $1M for work performed under nine contracts that Resendiz signed while intoxicated.
One night in 2008, Resendiz was having drinks with the city councilor and a guy from the Synthesis+ team when he was presented with a bunch of documents that the architect didn't identify as official business. “The day I signed, I had way too much to drink. It was after 5 p.m. and I signed it (the contracts) and I didn’t know what I was signing,” he said in a statement. (Apparently he didn't read the contracts or even ask for copies.) Meanwhile, the city maintains that the contacts are invalid because the city council never approved them. This is sort of the municipal-level version of someone getting completely wasted, vomiting in a cab, and needing their friend to bargain down the cab driver while he/she's passed out cold against the window. Stay classy, folks!
