Behold: one of the so-called "private estate islands" recently completed at The World, a collection of 300 manmade islands off the coast of Dubai that were designed and built to resemble continents on a flattened globe. Mega-developer Nakheel Properties Group started accepting guests to the World Island Beach Club last week—and at a rate of $11,000 a year, no less; 70 percent of the islands have been sold yet most have been sitting empty. All of a sudden even the best private islands out there seem a little dull.
