Location: Laguna Beach, Calif.
Price: $19,995,000
The Skinny: Residents of Laguna Beach, the SoCal seaside community immortalized in an early MTV reality soap, seem to have a real love for cookie-cutter Mediterranean-style sprawlers, so it was a surprise to find this concrete-and-glass number mixed in among the McMansions. Listed for almost $20M, this 7,500-square-foot mansion sits on the grounds of the luxe Montage Resort and boasts views of the Pacific to go with three bedrooms and six bathrooms. The design of the courtyard plunge pool seems to have been influenced by the designs of both Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Kahn, but that architectural interest fades inside, where the kitchen—with its overgrown island—doesn't exactly captivate. This is certainly a break from tradition, but it might be a bit cold to satisfy buyers at this price point. At least there are the resort amenities close at hand, like a spa, the communal pool, and a pair of restaurants, along with a concierge and housekeeping.
