Here Now, Photos of Oft-Bustling Locales Devoid of Crowds

As Hurricane Sandy swirls up the Eastern Seaboard, residents of the coast's cities have retreated into their sardine-can apartments and tourists have holed up in their hotels, creating apocalyptic scenes of deserted cityscapes usually teeming with people. For example, the photo above shows the eerily empty Tropicana casino in Atlantic City. And in New York, the public transit office used Flickr to share images of empty tunnels usually crammed with cars and cabs, deserted train stations that are near-constantly congested, and subway platforms that look as though a tumbleweed would pass through.
