The good news: fall shoulder season is apparently looking very good over the bridge this October. The sad news: it's still the last weekend for some clam shacks, until they re-open in 2013. Thus, we thought we'd take a cue from our cousins in the Hamptons and put together a Lobster Roll Price Index in time for the Columbus Day weekend. While some establishments keep a set price no matter what the season, others use market pricing. So we checked menus and made phone calls for the most up-to-date pricing info at fifteen randomly selected places, from the canal to the islands. Here now, the 2012 Cape & Islands Shoulder Season Lobster Roll Price Index:
Martha's Vineyard:
Edgartown Seafood Market......$13.95
Faith's Seafood Shack and Sushi Bar...$15.50
Menemsha Galley......$10.50Nantucket:
Brant Point Grill......$24
Cru......$28
The Nantucket Lobster Trap...$25Cape Cod:
Arnold's Lobster & Clam Bar...$15.99-$24.99
Baxter's Cape Cod....$19
Chatham Pier Fish Market....$19.99
Kream n' Kone......$14.25
The Lobster Pot Restaurant....$17
Mattakeese...$23.95
Osterville Fish Too....$17.99
Seafood Sam's...$12.95-$18.95
Spanky's Clam Shack....$18.99
Exact comparisons are difficult since the lobster rolls come in different sizes, with different fixin's, sides, drinks, and whatnot. Regardless, it goes without saying that Nantucket has the highest prices, as is the case in most everything. Of course, most are white-table-cloth-type places, not clam shacks, so it stands to reason. Over on the Vineyard, the Menemsha Galley's $10.50 roll might entice some to hop on the ferry and we'd understand. The Cape's choices range $12.95 at Seafood Sam's to $24.99 for Arnold's Jumbo Warm Lobster Roll. Enjoy!
