Mass. Manse, Among Largest in the U.S., Chopped by $6M

New, 3 comments

Built as an extravagant private home in 1889, the Searles Hopkins Castle later found use as a school for troubled teens, but that school decided to sell the property and has had some trouble doing so. Listed for $15M back in '08, the sprawling property has seen its price plummet down to $12.5M, then $11M, before finally settling at a little less than $9M. The remote estate is notable mostly for its size. As of April of this year, it was the second largest house on the market anywhere in America, with 54,245 square feet under the roof, including some 40 rooms, 14 bedrooms, 15 bathrooms, and an astounding 36 fireplaces.
