Location: Hillsborough, Calif.
The Skinny: A former Bain partner and sought-after retail executive, John B. Wilson purchased this historic California mansion in 1996, when he was working as Chief Operating Office at Gap, under now-J.Crew CEO Mickey Drexler. Even then, this section of tony Hillsborough, Calif. was commanding high prices, as Wilson paid $3.25M for the 13,000-square-foot mansion on 2.58 acres. Today, the estate is listed for $14.8M. Of course, Wilson restored and renovated the historic 1930s mansion, but some of those '90s-era additions—like the expansive tiled pool patio and bold white staircase—aren't necessarily appealing, the home's historic bones, particularly the wood-paneled parlor, are nothing if not well kept.
