Five Rare, Remote Mansions from the Wilds of Alaska

New, 4 comments

An immense land of natural beauty and extreme weather, Alaska may seem a crazy place to construct a million-dollar home, but some builders have braved the brutal winters to build some enticing houses. The creatively named Claw of the Dragon sits on the outskirts of Anchorage and boasts spectacular views over the giant bay known as Turnagain Arm. Designed by local architect Mark Ivy, the four-bedroom, 4.5-bath home was completed in 2003 in a style that Ivy describes as "extreme timber frame." The unique home is currently listed for $1.58M, a price that includes just 0.46 acres.

? Alaska tends to attract outdoorsy types, and this island, near Sitka, is likely to appeal to many of them. The 2,700-square-foot pad is perched just above the rocks, with a one-bedroom guest house accessible by boardwalk. A boat is the only way on or off the island, with what the brokerbabble describes as "a very short ride from Sitka." That ride feels much longer in the winter, and finding someone with $1M to spend on this hard-to-reach getaway may be a challenge.

? On the mainland at Sitka, this 3,650-square-foot manse is asking $1.19M, but cuts out the cold boat ride of the private isle. Designed and built by the current owner, the three-bedroom house lies just above the rocky shoreline and includes a full bar and lounge, so the owner never has to trek out in the snow for a drink.

? Also in Sitka, this seven-acre compound combines the landlubber lifestyle with that of a private island. A log lodge, which has previously been rented out, is located on a 0.5-acre island, accessed by a walking bridge, while the property's main accommodations are located on the shore. In total, the houses have some 5,000 square feet under roof, with updated kitchens and stunning views of the water and the lush surroundings. The list price is currently a more than substantial $1.825M.

? One of the most expensive residential properties currently on the market in Alaska, this 20-acre compound is also the most remote on this list. Located across the Kachemak Bay from Homer, in the tiny hamlet of Halibut Cove is a rare privately-owned outpost on a peninsula dominated by park land. Offered for the first time since its completion in 2000, the 6,600-square-foot compound has four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a whopping $2.85M asking price.
