Artists' 'Humping Pact' Marries Naked Men and Architecture

New, 4 comments

The latest project of Berlin-based artists Dmitry Paranyushkin and Diego Agullo involves architecture and a lot—as in dozens—of naked men. With images and some truly wild videos, the artists' "Humping Pact" is essentially an orgiastic bedlam of architectural elements and bare buttocks. In an interview with GUSmen, the artists said they came upon the idea while living in Essen, Germany. "We were inspired by the architectural complexity of [the UNESCO World Heritage site] Zollverein and at the same time we were interested in exploring how pornography affects our work. We brought inspiration and interest together." Onlookers are apparently not supposed to linger on the sexual aspect of their pieces—a little hard to believe, all things considered—and instead focus on universal primitiveness the titular humping represents. "We want to celebrate the human body that is convulsed by the desire to disseminate, conceive, and inspire." See? Totally not sexual at all.

Anyway, the dozens of men in each image and video are Paranyushkin and Agullo themselves, photographed, duplicated, and layered onto the original, unadorned building pics. The work has been touring Europe for nearly two years; its most recent exhibition, in the Beursschouwburg arts center in Brussels, included a "live performance" on its opening night.
