Most people source their Thanksgiving turkey from the local grocery store, but with the recent obsession with local, organic, and authentic ingredients, it won't be long before shotgun-toting locavores start heading to the hills to shoot their own turkeys. In honor of Thanksgiving, here are five hunting estates where such devoted culinarians can find plenty of holiday game. Up first is Cobble Hill Farm, a tract of fields and woodlands in Taghkanic, NY, a two-hour drive north of NYC. Though currently approved for a residential subdivision, the property, if kept intact, provides 518-acres of turkey hunting paradise, centered around a farmhouse that dates to the 1790s. Aside from the seasonal turkey shoots, the buyer could enjoy "organic farming, riding, cross country skiing or hiking." Listed in its entirety for $6.95M, the farm is also available as a smaller, 173-acre plot including the farmhouse, for $2.695M.
? Set neatly between Austin and Dallas in central Texas, this 1,660-acre working ranch combines cattle rearing with prime hunting grounds and a 7,300-square-foot mansion, completed in 2006. Listed for $6.95M, the estate is spacious, but not terribly stylish, with unique quirks like a stained glass ceiling light in the dining area and a log home pool house. A private 15-acre lake and the surrounding idyllic pastureland are more than enough to outweigh any decor failings.
? Also in Texas, this time some 80 miles west of Dallas, the larger but less developed Magic Valley Ranch comes with 3,290 acres and "extensive horse facilities including a hay barn, indoor and outdoor arenas, two round pens, and 39 stalls," but no grand mansion. Several rivers run through the property, suited for fishing, while the turkey-rich "mountain pasture" provides plenty of game for the Thanksgiving table. The price might be the only failing here, at a whopping $27.97M.
? The owner of this Georgia hunting estate appears to have been after far more than just turkey, at least judging by a "trophy room" crammed full of taxidermy. The 13,000-square-foot mansion, known fittingly as The Hunt, sits on just 20 acres in Georgia's interior, but that land includes two fishing lakes and plenty of passing game, including turkey, deer, and boar. The architecture was modeled after an inn on Georgia's Jekyll Island, but comes across rather strange here, hundreds of miles from the Atlantic, especially with a wing that closely resembles a lighthouse. The home is listed for $1.49M, a price that, thankfully, doesn't seem to include the furnishings.
? This 122-acre hunting estate in eastern Tennessee might have some of the most modest accommodations on this list—a pair of structures dating to the 1930s and one small newer building—but, as an in-holding surrounded by the Mt. Roosevelt State Game Reserve, there is a more than ample supply of game and few other hunters vying for the prize. The $1.2M listing does boast some creature comforts, like "a large sun room, piano room, living room, kitchen/dining with granite bar, professional grade oven and range, Brazilian walnut hardwood floors and screened porch."
