Here's one rather spectacular casualty of French President Francois Hollande's proposed 75-percent tax on the nation's super-rich: the left-bank townhouse belonging to Gérard Depardieu. The actor listed the 20,000-square-foot home just days after announcing his move just over the Belgian border, a move that incited French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Aryault to call Depardieu "a great star" but "[found] this quite shabby... All that just to avoid paying tax." Anyway, from the listing text it appears the property has two buildings positioned around some rather lovely gardens: a renovated 19th-century structure Depardieu planned to one day convert into a hotel, and his actual living quarters, a modern, airy, much-windowed loft with a rectilinear, copper-clad exterior, gleaming marble floors, corrugated metal accents (the ceiling, the stair railing), an eclectic assortment of furnishings, and a sweet-looking indoor pool. It's just the sort of dwelling for an art and design enthusiast with €50M (about $65M) to spare and not a care in the world about high taxes.
