Here's the abridged story behind Santa Monica's now-notorious 'House of Rock': designer buys mansion, designer flips said mansion with the help of some high-profile design buddies, everybody and their mother parties like it's 1999 and gets the house plastered all over the social pages of the Los Angeles Times, and finally, said designer pushes it all onto the market with a lofty eight-figure price tag. Designer Elaine Culotti converted the home, an Elmer Grey-designed manse once owned by Anchors Aweigh actress Kathryn Grayson, into an ultra-sleek showhouse with the help of decorating talent like Ralph Pucci and David Bromstad. Luxe details in the 10,000-square-foot home include furniture designed by Sami Hayek; one too many crystal chandeliers; and a library, master suite, and great room all hardwired with microphone panels and digital lines, sending shower songs and the like to the $3.5M in-house recording studio. While Culotti's expertise seems to lie in flipping Southern California homes (this is her 12th) only time will tell if those Gatsby-style parties—the kind with spotlights, 150-plus guests, and, uh, Christina Aguilera?—make for truly effective real estate marketing. Culotti's asking a hefty $22M for the manse. Above, have a look.
