A group of conservationists and private land owners officially scooped up all 3,000 acres of the Royal Gorge cross-country ski venue and its extensive open lands on Donner Summit this past Friday, having raised $11.25 million to finish the sale on the last day of the deal's deadline. The Truckee Donner Land Trust maintains it is not exaggerating when it calls the deal "one of the most important conservation victories for the Sierra in a generation." Conservationists are currently gloating in having put the final nail in the coffin of the 950-unit resort that the property was originally bought for in 2005, but which imploded into foreclosure before construction could start.
