An Eames-Saarinen Case Study House, Marred by Addition

New, 5 comments

Have a nomination for a jaw-dropping listing that would make a mighty fine House of the Day? Get thee to the tipline and send us your suggestions. We'd love to see what you've got.

Location: Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Price: $15,950,000
The Skinny: Built on a bluff above the Pacific in 1950, the Entenza House, widely known as Case Study No.9, was designed by two titans of midcentury design, Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen. When the house sold in 1991 for $1.6M, it was badly in need of a restoration. Then architect Barry Berkus came along, restored the Case Study house and built a brand-new four-bedroom mansion just yards away, obscuring the original views of the beach and ocean. Now the Entenza House serves as the guest house to the Berkus-designed main house, and the package is being offered for almost $16M. The compound last sold, in 2010, for $10M, so someone is looking to make a pretty penny on a quick flip.
