A Classic Seaside Home in Need of an Overhaul Asks $20M

Have a nomination for a jaw-dropping listing that would make a mighty fine House of the Day? Get thee to the tipline and send us your suggestions. We'd love to see what you've got.

Location: Santa Barbara, Calif.
Price: $19,950,000
The Skinny: Just down the street from the Spanish-style Biltmore Hotel, this 1951 home strikes an entirely different pose. The exterior facade is all clean midcentury lines, but the interiors don't look timeless so much as dated. Set on 0.81 walled acres, the 2,700-square-foot house has three bedrooms, 2.5 baths, breathtaking views, and, ugh, "popcorn" ceilings throughout. Uninspired furnishings, wall-to-wall carpet, a tiny kitchen, and, despite historic plans depicting one, no swimming pool round out this offering. So why, then, is it asking almost $20M? That old adage, "location, location, location", has never been quite so true as it is here. This is perhaps the most coveted corner in town, with the beach just across the street and the lush landscaping providing rare privacy.
