Plenty of homes on the market claim to be "custom built," but in order to really custom build a home the buyer will have to start from scratch. That means selecting a plot of land befitting a dream house. That's where we come in, picking out five prime plots for new construction. Kicking it off is the Diamond Ranch, a 350-acre parcel near Telluride, Colo. The ranch is a National Forest in-holding, meaning there are no pesky neighbors to bother you, or compete for the spectacular views of the San Juan Mountains (rendered here in hyper-realistic HDR photography). Just five minutes from the town of Telluride, this $27.5M tract offers a rare chance to be close to town while also enjoying the privacy that 350 acres brings.
? Far from the mountains of Colorado, this vacant waterview homesite sits directly adjacent to the world famous golf course at Pebble Beach, Calif. Measuring 1.1 acres with 185 feet of frontage on the course, the plot was previously listed for $12M. Now, this prime parcel is headed to auction on May 3rd. The bidding starts at $7.95M. Not bad considering the site enjoys views of the 11th and 12th greens, along with a sweeping panorama of the Pacific in one of the most coveted locations on the West Coast.
? Even further west lies Hawaii, and the astounding 4,500-acre tract known as the Hana Ranch. Listed for $55M, the acreage actually does include a house, but it is a modest home that could serve as the perfect guest house for someone spending $55M on land (they tend to like their houses large). Rising up from the shore to 2,200 foot peaks, the sprawling ranch offers picturesque views in every direction and more than enough land to explore on horseback. The current modest structure has another advantage too, in that utilities have already been installed, making the building process all the easier.
? For something more accessible, try the breathtaking Nirling Hill Ranch in Hall, Montana, currently asking $1.25M. For that price the buyer receives 1,478 acres of pristine rolling hills and a 175-acre reservoir. The vistas speak for themselves, and while we expected this place to be downright remote, in fact, it's just an hour from Missoula and its international airport.
? All land in the Hamptons, home to some of the country's most expensive houses, is certainly at a premium, but waterfront parcels command astronomical sums. This petite 1.6-acre beachfront plot in Bridgehampton, N.Y. is currently listed for $11.5M. There's enough space for a 6,000-square-foot house, plus a pool. It's currently just beach bramble, but an observation deck was erected on the site to give buyers a sense of the views.
