Location: Madison, Conn.
Price: $2,495,000
The Skinny: The iconic midcentury architect Philip Johnson is best known for his pure, original modern forms—namely the Glass House, his personal residence in New Canaan, Conn.—but, in this case, Johnson adapted a Colonial house, circa 1720, adding a glass-walled barn and tall stone walls in the 1950s. The result is a somewhat odd mix of colonial woodwork and minimalist steel and glass, but also produces some outstanding vignettes, like the glowing glass barn and a swimming pool that opens seamlessly onto a broad lawn dotted with hundred-year-old trees. Listed for almost $2.5M, this place was never going to be that affordable with a name like Philip Johnson attached, but may be the perfect home for a certain sort of couple, with one who loves modern design and the other who can't help but stick with the older stuff.
