Legal Victories

Imaging not paying rent for nearly a decade and then getting away with it. Such was Margaret Maugenest's good fortune this week when she won her legal battle against her landlord in New York State Court of Appeals. Maugenest stopped paying rent on her Brooklyn loft in 2003 when the landlord refused to make necessary fire and safety upgrades to bring the building up to code and the court agrees that what she did was OK. Maugenest set side the rent each month just in case she lost, so now she has an extra $60k in her bank account to spend on something nice. [Curbed NY]
