Five Cape & Islands 18th Century Homes, Asking $789K to $5M

Every Thursday, Curbed Comparisons breaks down what you can get at the same price point, style or size in five different Cape and Islands neighborhoods. This week: Houses built in the 18th Century.

Let's begin on Martha's Vineyard, at 46 Cooke Street, where we find The Admiral Shinn House in Edgartown's historic district. Built in 1795, the 3,738 sq. ft. five bedroom, four and a half bath Colonial home has "maintained the charm and character of previous years while providing today's comforts and amenities." Speaking of amenities, are the leaves in the lap pool part of a look or was the pool net nowhere to be found? Just wondering. The property was listed in January for $3,495,000 and was given a $545K pricechop in May. It's now yours for $2,950,000.

Over on Nantucket, at 16 Orange Street, we find a circa 1798 four bedroom, four and a half bath Federal style home. Renovated in 2005, the 3,800 sq. ft. home has harbor views from all three floors and the property has been "meticulously maintained and historically preserved." Updates include a gourmet kitchen, master suite with private deck and central air conditioning. There's also a roof walk, friendship stairs and a backyard gazebo. Yours for $5M.

Over in Osterville, at 1381 Main Street, we find The Allen Goodspeed House, also circa 1795. Was there a housing boom that year? The 4,780 sq. ft. residence includes five bedrooms, four and a half baths, and a "sophisticated gourmet kitchen" open to the great room. The 1.52 acre site is located within walking distance to Osterville Village and is yours for $1,890,000.

Now to East Sandwich, at 260 Route 6A, also known as the Old King's Highway. According to the house's web site, Hedgerow was built by Barnabus Nye in 1763. The property recently underwent a major restoration that gave the historic Colonial a nip and tuck of modern updates and amenities while maintaining "traditional detail, design and warmth." Speaking of warmth, there are numerous fireplaces, including a new one out on the patio. We're sure old Barney would have been just as stumped by that feature as he would be by the koi pond, but we think the whole place is rather lovely. There's also a greenhouse and guesthouse in addition to the four bedroom main residence. Yours for $1,395,000.

The updated home includes original woodwork, wide pine floors and antique hardware. First listed in July 2011 for $849K, two pricechops have brought the asking price to $789K.
