Location: Northeast Harbor, Maine
Price: $8,250,000
The Skinny: Aptly named The Ledges, this four-story summer cottage towers over the tiny inlet of Northeast Harbor on Maine's Mount Desert Island. Said to have been designed by legendary local architect Fred Savage in 1910, the home has since been extensively modified inside and, as the brokerbabble so accurately puts it, "little was spared in the in the attractive rejuvenation." Fans of historic detail might take issue with the "attractive" part, but there's no denying that this classic nine-bedroom home has been stripped of much of its historic character. Luckily, the grounds—which include old growth trees, stone pathways, and a private dock—haven't changed much in spirit since Savage's day. The elevated water views help to defray the damage from a tiny half-acre lot and put the price of this Vacationland escape at $8.25M.
