Location: Washington, D.C.
Price: $12,000,000
The Skinny: From the grounds and exterior—nevermind the $12M price tag—this estate just off of Embassy Row looks to be among the finest homes in Washington. Sadly, a step through the front door and the 1927 classic gives way to an ill-advised 2001 renovation that has the place looking more like a McMansion than the classic it should be. Said to have been "hardly used" by the current owners, the 11-bedroom, 11-bath mansion measures 11,500 square feet and has some of the shoddiest finishes this side of a Toll Brothers cul-de-sac. Practically every room has a Persian rug, but that's not enough to rescue this place from the hideous staircase, excess of recessed lighting, or the bargain-basement furnishings.
