Remember when Pierre Cardin acted like an "arrogant feudal seigneur" by renovating an entire Provençal village? Now the fashion guy has designed "The Palace of Light" as a "gift" for Venice. The proposed 800-foot-tall structure would house a "fashion university," a luxury hotel, and shops if built and has already been called "a spaceship that crashed into the lagoon, a shiny fishing lure or an illuminated mushroom" by suspicious preservationists. One Italian architect puts it simply: "If you want to do something for Venice, do something else." [previously; Washington Post]
