Once upon a time, Hughes L. Potiker was just a Michigan lawyer looking for a way to make money on the side, so he started selling "booklets full of discount coupons for restaurants, hotels, theaters and sporting events in Detroit." That cottage business later became Entertainment Publications, a coupon biz behemoth with more than 650 employees and publications in 135 markets. In 1992, after three decades of discount hawking, Potiker and his wife sold the company and moved from tony Bloomfield Hills, Mich. to sunny (and still fancier) La Jolla, Calif., where they became known as prolific philanthropists. There they built this swooping testament to '90s architecture, completed in 1996 to designs by architects Ken Rochetti and Arthur Porras. The five-bedroom, 7.5-bath mansion measures more than 9,000 square feet and occupies an enviable cliffside location overlooking the ocean. Unique features abound, like a long swimming pool that extends under the house, from a courtyard toward the cliff's edge, but the furnishings are, as one might expect from an old and wealthy couple, a bit beige-on-beige for modern tastes. Potiker passed away in 2005, but his wife Sheila has held onto the house ever since, until listing it earlier this year for $19M.
