Five Works by Starchitect Richard Meier, Now On the Market

New, 3 comments

The prolific minimalist Richard Meier is now one of the world's most famous architects, with a reputation that has drawn marquee commissions from developers and prominent citizens alike. But one need not call up Meier's office and pay a no-doubt exorbitant fee to live in one of his creations. That's not to say they come cheap, as this proposed combination at 165 Charles Street—the third in a trio of Meier-designed towers in NYC's West Village—can attest. Listed for $10M in its uncombined form, the pair of units could combine for 3,400 square feet, three bedrooms, four bathrooms, a 45-foot great room with double-height ceilings, facing the Hudson River.

? When Meier's On Prospect Park opened in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Prospect Heights in 2010, sales weren't quite as robust as the developers had hoped, but it still offered a cheaper way to access Meier's architecture. Now, nearly three years on, the building has finally sold out, with this one-bedroom closing for near its $850K asking price and a larger $2.1M two bedroom in contract. The one-bedroom, which lacks Prospect Park views, faces the rear of the building, but boasts nearly 1,100 square feet of living space and access to the building's many amenities, like a 30,000-square-foot health club complete with indoor swimming pool, a media room, and a children's playroom.

? Meier's urban commissions might garner more attention, but he has also tacked rural projects, like this house in N.Y.'s Westchester County. Listed for $4.5M, the austere white box is distinctly Meier, with multi-paned glass walls and swooping staircases and railings, but on a much larger scale than its NYC counterparts. Sprawling over 6,700 square feet, the four-bedroom spread sits on seven private treed acres.

? Not yet complete, Tel Aviv's Meier-on-Rothschild is set to become one of the architect's largest and most expensive residential projects. The 32nd-floor penthouse is said to be asking $50M, making it the most expensive property in Israeli history, and has a full suite of security features. The windows are made of reinforced glass, while a bullet- and fire-proof safe room is tucked behind a steel door. Those looking for a less expensive option could snap up one of the building's studios for $900K.

? Nestled in the leafy Chicago suburb of Bannockburn, Ill., this 5,800-square-foot manse is described in the brokerbabble as "conceptualized by Richard Meier Homes." While that hardly makes Meier's involvement a certainty, the design does bear more than a passing similarity to his work. The curved great room, with its distinctive fireplace, is particularly convincing. Completed in 1989, the five-bed, four-bath house is currently listed for $1.4M.
