The prolific minimalist Richard Meier is now one of the world's most famous architects, with a reputation that has drawn marquee commissions from developers and prominent citizens alike. But one need not call up Meier's office and pay a no-doubt exorbitant fee to live in one of his creations. That's not to say they come cheap, as this proposed combination at 165 Charles Street—the third in a trio of Meier-designed towers in NYC's West Village—can attest. The 32nd-floor penthouse is said to be asking $50M, making it the most expensive property in Israeli history, and has a full suite of security features. The windows are made of reinforced glass, while a bullet- and fire-proof safe room is tucked behind a steel door. Those looking for a less expensive option could snap up one of the building's studios for $900K.
? Nestled in the leafy Chicago suburb of Bannockburn, Ill., this 5,800-square-foot manse is described in the brokerbabble as "conceptualized by Richard Meier Homes." While that hardly makes Meier's involvement a certainty, the design does bear more than a passing similarity to his work. The curved great room, with its distinctive fireplace, is particularly convincing. Completed in 1989, the five-bed, four-bath house is currently listed for $1.4M.
