Bay Area society blog SF Luxe is reporting that a nine-acre estate in Woodside, Calif. sold late last year for a whopping $117.5M, a price that would make it the second most expensive home ever sold in the United States. Built in 2005 on land purchased for $8M, the 8,900-square-foot Neoclassical main house was commissioned by private equity titan Tully Friedman and designed by Virginia-based architect Allan Greenberg. The buyer's name has not been disclosed, but SF Luxe is claiming that he or she is "a name with which you're undoubtedly familiar." (Guesses? Leave them in the comments, please.)
Anyway, the sale price is undoubtedly astronomical, particularly considering an 11-acre parcel is available just down the street for $29M, but not entirely out of character for the area—Woodside is home to a historic Colonial that hit the market for $85M in September and earlier last year Russian billionaire Yuri Milner paid $100M for a 25,000-square-foot mansion 10 miles away, in Los Altos Hills. The national record was set last year, when real estate mogul Stanley Kroenke forked over $132.5M for a Montana ranch. At least Kroenke got plenty of land for his millions: that ranch included 124,000 acres.
