According to the high-brow design rag Architectural Digest, the magazine's AD100 list represents the cream of the crop when it comes to architecture and design. How does this design celebrity translate into the real world? With multi-milliondollar prices, of course. California traditionalist Marc Appleton has established himself as one of the go-to guys for the restoration of early-20th century architecture, but also has garnered plenty of interest for his new construction, like this 2002 build in the Montecito hills. The 8,000-square-foot, red tile-roofed mansion has five bedrooms and 5.5 baths, plus an adjacent one-bedroom guest house, all built in an updated but restrained Mediterranean style. Set on more than 11 acres with views of the Pacific and a five-car garage, the estate is currently listed for $12.95M.
? Want a giant, amenity-rich, architecturally ambiguous megamansion? SoCal star Richard Landry is your man. Landry counts Saudi royalty, titans of industries and celebrities—like Rod Stewart, Sylvester Stallone and Eddie Murphy—among his clients, but if one doesn't require the custom treatment, just fork over the $15M asking price for this Landry-designed estate in Thousand Oaks, Calif. The 10,000-square-foot columned brick behemoth, which was originally built for hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, boasts "a master suite with sitting room and dual baths, screening room, fitness facility, office, championship tennis court, outdoor entertainment area wood burning pizza oven, wood and gas BBQ, promenade terraces and gardens." All of that within guard-gated Sherwood Country Club Estates.
? When it comes to building anew with traditional style in the South, wealthy prospective clients could hardly find a better architect than Bobby McAlpine. The Alabama native calls Montgomery home, but is hardly limited to that state. In Boone, N.C., the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, McAlpine built this 6,000-square-foot estate back in 2001. Today, the three-bed, three-bath manse and wood-paneled guest house are listed together for $1.5M.
? Pacific Northwest design luminary Tom Kundig has worked from coast-to-coast on everything from minimalist lofts to remote cabins, but in this case, he worked over a nondescript 1970s house, transforming it into a hypermodern home, complete with glass walls, custom metal paneling, and moody black exterior paint. Listed for $2.175M, the two-bed, three-bath house measures 3,100 square feet and sits on a diminutive lot adjacent to Lake View Cemetery.
? An architect who takes easily to both urban and rural settings, Steven Harris—the man behind this recent NYC penthouse renovation—built this Connecticut farm compound back in 1985, but it has aged surprisingly well for something of its vintage. A series of stark white boxes surrounded by riotous flowerbeds and rolling hillsides, the 6.35-acre spread last sold in 2005 for $1.575M, and now it is back, listed for $1.65M.
