La Jolla's Curvy Hilltop 'Essencia' Asks $20K a Month

Have a nomination for a jaw-dropping listing that would make a mighty fine House of the Day? Get thee to the tipline and send us your suggestions. We'd love to see what you've got.

Location: La Jolla, Calif.
Price: $20,000 a month
The Skinny: This curvilinear modern home on a hilltop in La Jolla, Calif., has plenty of luxury touches: beautiful ocean and city views, a saltwater infinity pool, and a wine cellar with custom-built tasting room, to list just a few. It also has, like so many grand estates, a lofty-sounding name: "Essencia," in this case. And just to prove that brokers aren't the only folks who craft amazing descriptive babble, here is the architect's explanation for that name from the home's Flash-heavy official site: "The essence of the land, sea, and sky from which it has evolved, Essencia is both sculpture and residence." So, the name could have been worse. It could, for example, have been a portmanteau of "land, sea, and sky" (Lasesk? La SeaSky?), or something achingly conceptual like "Seagull I" or "The Albatross Nest." Whatever you want to call it, the five-bedroom, six-bathroom rental comes equipped with a home theater with wet bar, eight-foot mahogany doors, and a "designer-inspired" kitchen with Viking appliances. The listing asks $20K a month furnished, with a discount for renters with their own furniture.
