A Tour of Michael Bay's L.A. Estate, Now Listed For $13.5M

New, 2 comments

Fresh off the heels of scooping up a pedigreed Burton Schutt-designed Bel Air estate, leveling it, and breaking ground on a new Chad Oppenheim-designed home in its place, explosion-enamored fantasist Michael Bay is looking to unload a bit of extra real estate he has lying around. The doyen of demolition has just listed another home he owns in the area, a four-bedroom estate between Bel Air and Holmby Hills, for $13.5M. Designed by the late Jack Warner, this 8,000-square-foot mansion is big on clean lines and simple rectangular forms—all the better, one imagines, for dreaming up the kind of literal-minded CGI-fests that have become Bay's trademark.

Bay purchased the home for $5.16M in 1999, a year after Armageddon smoked box offices worldwide despite a lukewarm critical reception, back when Bad Boys II was still just a twinkle in his eye and the idea of a successful Transformers film franchise would have been naively met with a raised eyebrow. With a large wine cellar, a state-of-the-art home theater, and pool out back with "unobstructed views of the entire Los Angeles basin," the place is likely to get swept up pretty quickly by some enterprising member of the Hollywood elite.

Like a gigantic asteroid or a horde of evil robots, Bay is a seemingly unstoppable force with huge implications for the real estate market. Last year he sold a Santa Barbara-area home for $4.9M (it was originally listed for $6.8M). What Sunshine State properties will he set his sights on next? Might there be a brand-new Oppenheim up for grabs sometime soon?
