Architects John C. Austin and Frederick M. Ashley won the 1930s competition to design Griffith Observatory, producing what a former observatory tour guide called "the hood ornament of Los Angeles." Lesser known is that the pair beat out a "a sleek Art Deco structure" designed by modernist architect Richard Neutra, who was recently eternalized on The Simpsons. [LAT via Curbed LA]
