Resorts have had differing strategies about what to do with the surge in ski touring, whereby grippy skins affix to the bottom of the skis and allow you hike uphill to "earn your turns." Some have banned it, some allow it before the lifts open, others have sold cheap passes to allow skiers to do so on their trails. Crested Butte is one of the first to launch its own ski touring center with equipment manufacturers Scarpa and Ski Trab, which will rent touring equipment to skiers for use in-bounds or in the backcountry.
