Inspired by conflict, morality, and death—you know, just your basic glass-half-full subjects—Kansas-based sculptor Kris Kuksi erects ornate, Rococo-esque cathedrals atop tanks, effectively plunking classic symbols of faith and God atop mechanical structures of the modern-day warfare. His aptly named Churchtanks are made from thousands of pieces, mixed media from his travels, and assembled in a "orchestral-like seamless cohesion." Overall, Kuksi aims to raise questions about what it means to do the right thing and how morality shifts with culture, as culture changes.
While similar in construction to the works of other sculptors who play with architecture—including the artists who plunked homes on feet and atop skulls—Kuksi's work seems to boast much heavier, more obscure subtext; according to his official site, these works "define the historical rise and fall of civilization and envisions the possible future(s) of humanity." More art talk: they evoke "a sanctum and a mausoleum for our suffocated spirit" and "understand, and bend, the limits of mortality."
