A little known fact about Detroit is that it once put in its bid to host the official, permanent headquarters of the United Nations. Motivated by a booming population after WWII, the city proposed siting the "Capital of the World" on Belle Isle, a 1,000-acre island in middle of the Detroit River. Ultimately, of course, NYC won.
