The CapeFLYER will head out of South Station and over the canal this evening, officially beginning seasonal Boston to Hyannis weekend passenger rail service. Since the Cape Cod Tunnel only exists on bumper stickers, this means the CapeFLYER will be giving the circa 1935 Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge a workout from now until Labor Day. The second longest vertical lift bridge in the U.S. (more fun facts, this way) has had to busy itself with freight trains ever since passenger rail ceased a quarter century ago, but no more. To celebrate this most awesome occasion, we bring you 13 historic photos of the Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge.
