Daniel Boulud moved into his current apartment in 1998, just as he relocated his flagship restaurant, Daniel, to its current location at 65th Street and Park Avenue in NYC. Today the chef and restaurateur still lives directly above that restaurant, calling the rather convenient setup his "home base" and "everything I worked for all my life" in a CNNMoney piece that ran last year. Although rumors swirled a few years ago that Boulud was looking to sell the 2,500-square-foot pad for $6.5M, nothing ever became of all that chatter.
Boulud's reworked and totally whizbang kitchen is featured in the May issue of Elle Decor, where he explains that his formerly 150-square-foot kitchen was simply inadequate. (Duh.) Enlisting architect Stephanie Goto for the space's first-ever renovation—"she has an amazing aesthetic, with great clarity of line and proportion," he says—Boulud chose Dada for the cabinetry and drawer storage; schmancy Gaggenau appliances; specialized equipment (a plancha, or griddle, a steam oven, a gas oven, and so on); and precisely zero microwaves—"I make popcorn on the stovetop, au naturel," he says. There's also Caesarstone countertops, a hexagonal dining table—"I just thought that a round top was boring"—and a Himalayan wool rug by Stephanie Odegard, who's done all the rugs in Boulud's restaurants.
